Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.
The site, identified by intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of access tunnels down to the depot... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.
There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.
The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.
British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were numerous British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."
Last December, the US military conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN estimates Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
